Planter Inspection
For the past twelve years I have been involved in all aspects of the farm operations. I quickly figured out that the most important piece of equipment in crop production is the planter. The planter directly determines crop yield potential by managing seed depth, spacing, and soil-to-seed contact during a limited planting window. Proper planter setup, including downforce and row cleaners, ensures uniform emergence, which is essential for maximizing yield.
Making sure your planter is operating at its full potential starts with a preseason inspection. Checking bearings, disk openers, parallel arms, gauge wheels, closing systems, etc. are key to starting your seed off right. Emergence plays a key role in yield; PTI’s multiyear emergence study showed a 13.5% loss in yield after just 24 hours of delayed emergence. It more than doubles after 36 hours to a 29.2% loss and then goes up to 65.5% after 48 hours. It’s easy to see the importance of having uniform emergence. One of the ways to help achieve uniform emergence is by properly inspecting your planter and replacing any worn or damaged parts.
